Let the Rain Come Down

There is nothing better than the first rain of the season. It clears the air and makes everything clean and beautiful. My favorite part is that I get to stay indoors, listen to the rain on the window, and curl up with a warm blanket. The little things like this have me welcoming winter with open arms.

Light Up the Sky

When the sun goes down on the farm, a new kind of light stretches across the fields. This is the bonfire, a family tradition for many Americans this time of year. I was captivated this year by how much amber light our bonfire threw out, making for unusual and beautiful pictures. The amber glow contrasting with the black night sky was stunning, and shadowed images created new depth and mystery. The kids roasted sausages and marshmallows, while the adults enjoyed the heat. What are you winter traditions?

Food Coma Friday: Detox

The day after the feast of Thanksgiving, it is important to detox. For me, this includes breaking a sweat, yoga and drinking ample amounts of water. By the end of the day, I will also enjoy a fruit smoothie (with spinach of course).

The Presidential Turkey Pardon

Turkey Apple was pardoned by President Obama this year.

It is turkey day in the United States. One interesting White House tradition is the Presidential Turkey Pardon. Every year since 1947, the president of the United States pardons one turkey gets the honor of "living to see another day." Pardoned turkeys get a trip to Disneyland where they are showcased, and they are then retired at George Washington's estate in Virginia. Happy Thanksgiving America!

Product Push: Canon PowerShot

I am not a professional photographer, so I need a good camera that helps me create pretty images as I document my life. I carry my camera everywhere, so a bulky SLR is out of the question, but a lot of point and shoots just don't deliver on quality. Luckily, this dilemma ended on my birthday. My amazing family (and best friend Julia) bought me the Canon PowerShot SD 4500 IS, and it is amazing. Small enough to carry in my purse, this camera has a 10x zoom that takes sharp pictures. I am loving this camera because of its functionality and quality, something that don't always go hand in hand.

Here are a few image I recently shot with my Canon.

Keep It Simple

My husband caught my attention the other night when he was reading "ways to make life simple". I immediately became intrigued, and here are my favorites. These are perfect for reflecting on the upcoming holiday season and new year.
  1. Live below your means. Don't buy stuff you don't need, and always sleep on big purchases.

2. Get off your high horse, talk it out, hug and move on.
3. Make mistakes, learn from then, laugh about them, then move on.

4. Get rid of stuff you don't use.
5. Don't try to please everyone. Just do what you know is right.
6. Fill your car with gas on your way home, not in the morning when you are late.

7. If you hate doing it, stop it.
8. Spend time with like minded people who are smart and driven.
9. Drink water when you are thirsty.

10. Find hard work you actually enjoy doing and do it in a pretty space!

Happy LA

Easy wardrobes that don't compromise style and sophistication

The one thing LA is not lacking is shopping. That said, huge department stores are overwhelming and boutiques are usually pretentious and intimidating. A few weekends ago I went with my fashion consultant (aka cousin - Gina) to Happy LA, a boutique tucked away in the beautiful Pacific Palisades, and I haven't stopped thinking about this little gem since. Actually, I've been visualizing a "Happy SF" version to service us northern Californians. Happy LA has (1) a great layout for easy shopping, (2) uncomplicated and sophisticated styles, and (3) stylists who are over the top accommodating. I purchased a great shirt designed by Happy LA and have received numerous compliments. If you are in the area, stop by.

Food Friday: Pomegranate Juice

This past weekend, Jimmy and I picked and squeezed pomegranates at my family's farm. It is a tradition to head home this time of year and make this juice for jam. My uncle has an old-fashioned make-shift "juicer" that makes this process fun and a group event. We literally have designated stations for the family: the pickers, the washers, the sorters and the crusher. My uncle is the only crusher and he has it down to an art. Twenty gallons later, we popped open coronas and added a little pomegranate juice. It is a perfect way to end a great day.

Pomegranate juice facts:
(1) Contains three to four times the amount of antioxidants as green tea.
(2) Contains high levels of Vitamin C that boost the immune system.
(3) They are delish.

Step 2: Gather

Step 3: Crush

Happy Birthday Mickey!

Today is Mickey Mouse's birthday! Born at the release of Steamboat Willie in 1928, Mickey is 82 years old. Responsible for my most memorable childhood (and yes, adult) memories, Mickey is everybody's favorite mouse. Here are a few of my favorite Mickey moments.

Pomegranates - The Royal Fruit

Now, I am not one to admire my food, but the pomegranate is stunning on the inside and out. I like to call it the royal fruit because of its crown and ruby toned jewel seeds that carry the sweetest burst of flavor. Do you think our future Princess Kate loves royal pomegranates too?

Finally, The Perfect Bootie

Talia Bootie

I've been on the hunt for the perfect bootie for a year now. I am very picky with where the bootie sits on my ankle, the heel size, and overall comfort. This weekend, I was delighted when I stumbled into Cole Haan and found a bootie that met all my non-negotiables. Meet Cole Haan's Talia bootie, a shoe worth the investment. They are made with a sleek suede and have Nike Air technology for the ultimate comfort. I can't wait to pair these with skirts, tights and skinny jeans.

Fall and the Farm

I don't get out to the farm as often as I'd like, so I dramatically feel the change in season every time I visit. During this trip fall is full steam ahead, the air is turning from brisk to cold, and my breath is visible in the air. Giant fig and walnut leaves color the land and pomegranates and persimmons are ripe for picking. (More on pomegranates this week.) The farm in the fall is stunning and exemplifies all that is right in the world.
