Food Friday: A Collaboration of Sweetness

We all need a little sweetness in our life, and with the Halloween around the corner, my favorite bloggers have made some deliciously sweet and beautiful treats. Taylor, Mara, Valerie and Emily are all talented ladies with a serious knack for baking and beautiful photography. Please stop by and check out their recipes and inspiring blogs. They are my daily reads, and I have no doubt they will become yours if they aren't already.

Handbags with Heart

My cousin bought me the cutest handbag for hosting her baby shower. It is made by Mar Y Sol, a socially and environmentally responsible company that offers handmade handbags from Kenya and Madagascar. The sale of these handbags helps families gain economic independence and generates community funding. I love my bag's texture, color, and the fact that it is made by the talents of local artists out of renewable materials. Even beyond the aesthetic appeal, carrying a piece of fashion with meaning feels great. Does your handbag have heart?

The Ultimate Clutch

When I was a little girl, I loved all things that sparkled. I can't tell you how many crystal trinkets I owned. Fast-forward 20 years. I am on my lunch break rushing through Nordstorms to grab a much needed mascara when suddenly a shiny glass case catches my eye. That was all it took to derail my "mascara only mission." Ever since, I have been coveting Judith Leiber's creative clutches. They are the perfect mix of sparkle and sophistication. However, since I don't have a few thousand dollars lying around, I am thinking this should become my version of Valerie's DIY project.

James

A few amazing moments from the James concert I attended a few weeks ago.

This intimate and historic venue was packed (even on a Monday night).

Lead singer is second from the left. He stood there for a few minutes listening to everyone sing his lyric "When I look look in your eyes I see your soul." The emotion on his face was priceless. I could tell he was having a "moment."

A couple in love.

Pasta Moon

You know that restaurant that gives you butterflies in the stomach while you wait in anticipation for your meal? It is the place where you savor every last bite, wishing your stomach never got full. Pasta Moon is that place for me. From their rich pumpkin ravioli to the sweet corn clam chowder, this place make me smile every single time. If you live in Northern California, you are missing out if you haven't dined here.

TV Land: Game Shows

Family Feud

I had so much fun reminiscing yesterday when I posted classic sitcoms, that I had to continue with game shows. Nothing was more fun growing up than challenging my brother to game show competitions like Double Dare or Family Feud. And I admit it . . . I even tried to get my family on these games a few times. I remember my grandma loved the sappy dating games like Love Connection and the Newlywed Game. At the time I didn't see the appeal, but now I can't get enough. Catching re-runs of these shows is hilarious. I especially love the "conservative" yet "risque for the time" questions posed on the Newlywed Game. TV Land is quickly becoming my new favorite channel.

TV Land: Sitcoms

Before flat screens and HD, lived the world of antennas and dials. There was no cussing and thirty minute shows really made you laugh. I remember rushing through my homework so that I could catch the evening line-up on Fox. Every night without fail, my favorite shows played from 5 until 8pm. I prayed for good reception and had to adjust the antenna at least 2 times a week to avoid static. Between the catchy theme songs and life lessons, sitcoms of the 1980s were some of the best of all time. Here are my favorites.

A Special Sender

My birthday is still a few weeks away, but I got a note in the mail from my favorite author Emily Giffin (see my post here) today. When I first saw the beautiful teal envelope I was excited, but nothing prepared me for this special sender. Can I tell you I almost had a heart attack on the spot. I can already tell 30 is going to be great. Thank you so much Jimmy for emailing Emily and asking for this! And thank you Emily for being so accessible and kind.

When was the last time you made someone's day with a handwritten note? I am getting out my special stationary today.

Renaissance Faire

Saturday was filled with all the wonderment and magic that comes with the Halloween season. Lords, knights, maidens and queens gathered to sing Celtic ballads and feast on turkey legs while maids served beer. Magic brooms stood upright, jeweled chalices flowed with black cherry cider, and maidens wore flower headpieces and gold crowns. It felt like the scene out of a medieval movie set, complete with English accents. Even Merlin the magician made an appearance.

Food Friday: Cucumber Burger

I am always looking for ways to increase my green intake while enjoying classic foods I love. Growing up, I remember my uncle putting cucumbers on his burger. I thought this was the strangest thing, that is . . . until this week. Jimmy made burgers with really thin and delicious buns (thanks, Costco). I decided to get creative, so I chopped up some cucumber I'd purchased for a salad and added it to the burger. The cucumber had the right amount of crunch and freshness to make a perfect meal. I know we will enjoy our burger cucumber combination from now on.
