An Interesting Perspective on JCrew

I just read an interesting perspective on JCrew's quality on Mess or Impressed. While we can all agree that JCrew has great styles, what is your take on their quality and cost?

  1. I just read the article. That's horrible! They are too expensive for clothes to be falling apart.

  2. I just read it and wow! I do like their clothing, but have never owned any, this will make me think twice before buying!

  3. Wow, not worth it for the way theyve raised their prices in the last few years!

  4. I shop at their outlets, and love the clothing! My hubby will only wear J Crew T's, but at outlets we get for like $10 each, crazy cheap:-)

  5. I don't know . . . I have a few things from JCrew that have held up just fine. I think that most run-of-the-mill clothing stores (Gap, UO, JCrew, etc.) carry clothes that definitely have a time line; they're not gonna last forever. But the pieces I have from JCrew have done fine in the washer (and in the dryer--on delicate--for that matter).

The hike in price is disappointing, but it's definitely not specific to JCrew. When I was in high school, I worked at Express, and we often sold jeans for $24. Those days are long gone. ;) And the Gap, too! They used to have totally decent prices, and now everything is so much more expensive. I think it's happening across the board . . .

  6. I go back and forth. Some items I feel are well worth the price and others not so much! It is give and take.

  7. JCrew is one of my favorite all time retailers.
I have never ever had a quality issue with anything and I am sure if I did they would rectify immediately.
I run a store for a nationwide retailer (not JCrew) and working in a mall every day of my life I can attest to the level of customer service they offer being incomparable to anywhere else.
Most stores you enter, no one even looks at you let alone offer assistance.
I was looking for a puffer vest this fall at my local JCrew and they were out of my size. I didn't have time to wait around, so they took my info and found me one in my size on the other side of the country and had it shipped to my home free of charge!
How many other retailers would do that?

  8. Thanks for all your input on my JCrew post! I too, absolutely LOVE my JCrew. And I do have plenty of pieces that I love and have had for good long time. I do also really appreciate their customer service. One day soon, when I take back my things, I'm sure they will service me with a smile. This is all the more reason for the post. I guess I am just disappointed. And I do want to let them know about it all, how else will things get better! Thank you guys, and Marcie for all your input and comments. It has made my day!

  9. I have never had any problems with their quality but do think that they over price the items a bit. it's very rare that I will shop there so can't say too much. it's definitely paying for the brand name and lots of people are fine with that!

  10. Very interesting!!

I love JCrew's style, really do. But lately, the quality makes me cringe. I've worn JCrew since I was in HS. I remember the days of sweaters that lasted 5 years and chinos that could withstand anything. In the last 18 months I have had a cashmere hoodie (that was almost $200!) get a huge hole in the sleeve bc the cashmere is garbage (this is what I was told...) chinos rip on the seam when I buy my work pants roomy, tshirts stretch out to ungodly sizes. I'm just so over it.

But they're styling and details are great. I just can't rely on them anymore...I usually go for the uber sale rack.

  11. so interesting! i don't really buy clothes from there but have noticed that a lot of stores are going the way of raising prices...no good!

  12. Very interesting! To be honest, I don't think I have ever purchased anything from J-Crew, although I have looked, and liked some things from time to time...their prices always seemed a bit to much for what appeared to be rather basic items, yet I still liked their store...very classic. So, I can't really comment on the quality, but I find this to be a good point, and something similar to what I discovered with Express over the years...prices going, up, up, up, but not the quality or what they offered, just seemed they thought they were now designer, but had the same things you can find at Forever 21 or H&M! Thanks for posting this, Marcie!

  13. Marcie that was an excellent post over at Cody's. Thanks so much for pointing it out - I haven't had the quality issues, but I have noticed the prices skyrocketing and it has left me very disappointed. Also, certain sales associates are super snotty and that is NOT okay. It's CUSTOMER SERVICE.

  14. I will have to go and read that article now, when I lived in the states I used to order Jcrew online and usually the online sale items. they were one of the few brands that carried pants (khakis) that would fit my frame. right now I don't own any of their brands.

  16. We all know my hardcore obsession with J.Crew and I've never really had a problem... Granted, I've never bought jeans there. After a LOT of wear, though, I have noticed the occasional hole near the seam in some of my knits, but nothing awful.
