Welcoming Twenty Eleven

Twenty Ten was a year of change. I entered my thirties, started a new job, welcomed a niece and nephew and also lost two of my closest friends - my grandma and grandpa. I even tapped into my creative side and started Lemons and Laundry. Filled with bitter and sweet moments, Twenty Ten was a year where I learned a tremendous amount about myself and navigating the world around me. I am welcoming the adventures of Twenty Eleven with open arms.

How To: Vintage Hanging Jewerly Box

I untangled necklaces and rediscovered many jewerly pieces over the weekend. My mom helped me make this hanging jewerly box which now is an art piece on my bathroom wall. It all began with misplacing my jewerly because I have pieces stashed in multiple drawers all over my apartment. Also, I am always rushing in the morning and never have time to untangle my bracelets and necklaces. Now, each piece is beautifully displayed in a nook, and I can accessorize in no time.

The Hanging Jewelry Box is inexpensive, fun, and easy to make. First, sand the printer drawer (found at a local antique store), then paint the color of your choice, and finally screw in your knobs and hooks. The total cost is around $40.

Antique Printer Drawer: $30
Spray Paint: $2
Glass doorknobs and hooks: $8

Pink Lavender

One amazing thing about the farm are the unobstructed views. This is something I took for granted growing up, but now that I am a city girl, I savor every moment I have on the open land. When the sky decides to display amazing colors, I have a front row seat. After a night of thick fog, I was happy to wake up to a clear pink and lavender sky. I rarely wake up at dawn but am grateful that the sheer anticipation of Christmas got me up early on this crisp and dewy morning. All was still and peaceful before the excitement of Christmas started.

Sugar Detox

As part of my holiday detox plan, I am discussing sweets one final time until I cut them out of my life forever. (Okay, maybe a month.) To say I indulged this weekend is an understatement. My aunt's counters were packed full of assorted sugary treats, and I didn't hold back. (I literally ate and ate until my little heart was content.) I devoured everything from home made pies and cakes to cream puffs and mounds of chocolate. I enjoyed every bit of my sugar rush, but officially have entered the coma stage. I am actually excited to spend the week eating only things steamed and green.

Candy Cane Magic

The Candy Cane is the quintessential treat of Christmas. Aside from enjoying this stick of sugary goodness the traditional way, here are a few lovely variations. Personally, peppermint hot chocolate is my favorite and festive way to enjoy the traditional candy. How do you enjoy your peppermint treats? On the tree, in your drink, or smothered in chocolate?

Bowling 2.0

I really think I was born a century too late, so it is no surprise that I love all things vintage (see here and here), including my entertainment (see here). I was pleasantly surprised, however, when Jimmy's work party was at a hip and modern bowling alley. Set up like a chic lounge, it had a full bar, mood lighting, and neon pins! It was so fun to sip an appletini while playing a few games. After a night out at the "club" I have to say that I am still partial to the 1980s bowling alley, but this was fun for a night.

Portman Dazzles as the Swan Queen

I saw the thriller The Black Swan this weekend, and I am convinced more than ever that Natalie Portman will win the Oscar for best actress this year. This movie is definitely a must see. Natalie did an amazing job portraying Nina Sayers, a troubled ballerina struggling with inner demons that keep her from reaching her full potential. This film really taints the perception of the graceful ballerina. It has to be one of the most physically and psychologically demanding careers in the world.

Product Push: Obagi Facial System

Attention sun worshipers, beware of Melasma. I was your typical teenager that ignored my mom's skin saving advice about staying out of the sun, and wouldn't you know she was right! Enter dark discoloration spots on my face. Horrified, I visited my dermatologist and she put me on the Obagi system 8 week treatment. After a few weeks of looking like a burn victim (red and peeling skin), newer and soften skin emerged. I've never felt better about my complexion. The dark spots are gone, and my skin is completely renewed.

What skin saving rules do you live by?

Isn't That The Truth

Sometimes I have to sit back and laugh the idea of being "settled." I always thought it would come, but am realizing that things are always changing. That must be the adventure called LIFE!

The National Christmas Tree

I was lucky enough to be in DC during the National Christmas Tree lighting. In front of thousands of people, the First Family did the honors of lighting the tree. The tree is huge and is encapsulated by twinkling lights, and it even has a moving train surrounding it. Here are some images Jimmy captured.
